As the search for the running mate of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu continues, a political group has tipped a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara for the slot.
The Coalition for Peace and Progress has urged the APC to consider Dogara, saying he has the qualities and political experience to serve on the ticket.
The group made this call through its coordinator, Muhammad Chindo at a press briefing on Saturday, according to TheCable.
Chindo said the future vice-president must be a Christian who could transcend primordial sentiments bordering on religion and the twin evils of tribalism and sectionalism in the country.
“After a thorough, painstaking search and our avowed commitment and dedication to the noble cause of ensuring a united Nigeria, we unanimously conclude the most suitable to hold the position of the vice-president under the APC is Yakubu Dogara,” he said.
He described the former Speaker as a “reliable fellow” in his dealings with others, especially on matters of state and national interests.
“Throughout his tenure at the national assembly, it was such noble qualities he exhibited that made him to be legendary and unique for all time to come.
“Dogara is a grassroots politician who was tested and trusted by the people of his constituency, who had the honour and privilege to be elected four consecutive terms,” Chindo added.
Meanwhile, there is a growing confusion in the APC over the possibility of a Muslim-Muslim ticket, a move that prominent Christian bodies had kicked against.
It would be recalled that a former APC National Welfare Secretary, Kabir Masari, was reportedly nominated as Tinubu’s running mate, albeit as a ‘placeholder’ in order to meet the June 17 deadline of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
