Renowned Nigerian disc jockey, Oluwaforijimi Amu, popularly known as DJ Jimmy Jatt, has shared the details of his battle with chronic kidney disease and the experience of undergoing a kidney transplant with a view to explain his public absence.
In an interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka, the celebrated DJ opened up about his health struggles, which began in 2020 after he lost his sight.
This led to a surgery to restore his vision, which marked the beginning of a series of health complications.
Reflecting on the events leading to his health crisis, DJ Jimmy Jatt mentioned his decision to explore life outside of Nigeria in 2019, which he believes might have contributed to his condition. “I said that I wanted to spend more time out of the country, exploring places like Europe and America. I’ve lived all my life in Lagos, Nigeria, so I felt the need to experience the world,” he shared.
However, in 2020, his travel plans were disrupted by health issues and the onset of travel restrictions due to the pandemic.
He explained, “I lost my sight, had surgery, and regained it. After that, I felt it was time to take a break and live elsewhere. I moved to the U.S., where I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and had to undergo dialysis for some time.”
After returning to Nigeria, DJ Jimmy Jatt underwent a successful kidney transplant in 2022 and took time off to focus on his recovery.
He mentioned that he remained low-key during this period, “I decided to be quiet for a while to recover properly. After my discharge, I left Nigeria again, DJing in America and Europe, but I eventually returned to Nigeria in December.”
Addressing misconceptions about kidney disease, DJ Jimmy Jatt emphasized that lifestyle choices are not always the cause.
“Lifestyle is not always the cause of kidney ailments. I’ve never smoked, and I stopped drinking alcohol a long time ago. In my case, it was caused by diabetes,” he revealed.
