Former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to rescue Nigerians from the country’s political crisis.

Melaye made the announcement in a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

He also posted the letter on his official X account on Thursday.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” the former lawmaker stated.

The ex-PDP stalwart, who was the party’s candidate in the 2023 Kogi governorship election, said his move followed “deep reflection” on the state and trajectory of the opposition party.

“I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” Melaye added, urging that his withdrawal be treated as total and immediate across all levels of the PDP.

Melaye, a known ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, represented Kogi West in the Senate between 2015 and 2019.

He is now part of the opposition coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections.

His resignation comes less than a year after the PDP ward in Aiyetoro Gbede suspended him in September 2024 for alleged anti-party activities, accusing him of shunning a disciplinary committee invitation over alleged misconduct.
