Despite Letter Stating Otherwise, Kano State Govt Denies Banishing Former Emir, Sanusi II
The Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice for Kano State, Ibrahim Mukhtar has disclosed that deposed Emir, Muhammad Lamido Sanusi II was not banished from the Emirate.
While speaking on a live program on Wednesday, Mukhtar denied reports in the media that the former Emir was banished as he maintained that Sanusi was only dethroned and removed from the State in order to maintain peace.
It will be recalled that Sanusi was on Monday deposed from the position as Emir of Kano. It was gathered that the letter making this announcement was signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji and delivered amid tight security led by the Kano State Police Commissioner.
On the heels of the Attorney General’s denial of the deposed Emir banishment, Nigerians have called out the Kano State Government for the contents of the letter that was written on Monday as it stated that Sanusi was to be moved to Nassarawa State which was said to be in line with Kano State Emirate Council of Law, 2019.
Also, the actions of the security operatives that besieged the Emir Palace on Monday suggested that Sanusi was being given the treatment given to deposed traditional rulers in the time past as they are usually taken to places far away and kept under house arrest.
It was also gathered that Sanusi’s lawyers and close associates have not been allowed to see him since Monday, thereby confirming that he might be under an arrest. He is currently being held at a house belonging to the Chairman of Awe Local Government Area in Awe town, where is he not granted access to receive visitors.
Since his dethronement on Monday, Sanusi, who was a former CBN Governor has received two appointments from Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State who has appointed him as member of Kaduna Investment Promotion Agency and Chancellor of Kaduna State University.
