Despite FG’s suspension of subsidy removal, NLC insists on planned protest

Barring any last minute changes, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it will proceed with its planned nationwide protest on Thursday.

This comes despite the announcement by the Federal Government that it has made a u-turn on the plans to remove fuel subsidy.

The NLC had urged the 36 state governors to demand the withdrawal of the removal of the fuel subsidy scheduled for June.

The union argued that the proposed removal of fuel subsidy was a transfer of government failure and inability to effectively govern the country.

But on Monday, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed stated that the Federal Government has suspended its plan to remove the subsidy on petrol.

However, this declaration wasn’t enough to pacify the NLC as it insisted that the mass rallly would go on as planned.

Speaking with The PUNCH, the Assistant General Secretary, NLC, Asuzu Echezona said “We are continuing with preparation for the protests.”

In a similar vein, the Ogun State Chairman of the NLC, Emmanuel Bankole also told the newspaper that the labour union would go ahead with its planned protest.

“The congress observed a game plan and deceit in the new development hence, there is no going back in the planned protest scheduled in the state against the plan by the Federal Government.

“We are aware (of the suspension of the fuel subsidy removal). We are going ahead with the Thursday protest. There is no going back,” he said.
