In a dramatic political twist, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the state’s long-term development interests and extensive stakeholder consultations as key reasons for the move.

The announcement was made following a high-level, closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday.

According to reports, Oborevwori was welcomed by top APC chieftains, signaling what many now describe as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Oborevwori, who clinched the governorship seat under the PDP platform in the 2023 election, said the decision was not taken lightly but was driven by a desire to align Delta State with the center for better access to federal support and infrastructural development.

His defection is already sending ripples through the political landscape in Delta, especially as unverified reports suggest that former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Oborevwori’s predecessor and the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential race may also be on his way out of the party.

In a video making the rounds on social media, Okowa was seen addressing constituents and hinting at a looming departure from the PDP.

“Be assured that we will not go in the wrong direction; we will take the best direction, the best path for our people,” Okowa said in the footage, further fueling speculation of his next political move.

The dual developments, if confirmed, could mark a strategic shift in Delta State’s political alignment and pose a significant challenge to the PDP’s dominance in the South-South region.
