As Nigeria counts down to her 64th anniversary as an independent nation, the country is expected to finally gain its freedom as a self-reliant nation. This is coming as the country’s sole functional private refinery, owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote, has promised that there will be no need to depend on imported fuel from October 1.
The Dangote Refinery, which began distribution on Sunday, has boasted that it has the capacity to meet not only Nigeria’s fuel demands but also the wider West African region. With gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel production in full swing, the refinery is set to eliminate Nigeria’s reliance on fuel imports, fulfilling the nation’s long-awaited goal of fuel independence.
The refinery’s strategic shift to Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, an initiative supported by the Technical Sub-Committee appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will ensure that Nigeria moves towards complete self-reliance in fuel production.
This implementation, which will officially begin on October 1, promises significant savings for the country, reducing the need to procure crude oil in dollars.
As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day, the introduction of Naira-based crude sales signals a bold new chapter in the nation’s pursuit of economic sovereignty, with far-reaching impacts expected across Africa’s energy and industrial sectors.
