Court dismisses FG’s request to extradite Abba Kyari to US

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the extradition request of the Federal Government over the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

In a suit instituted by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the Federal Government had sought to extradite the embattled police officer to the United States to answer fraud allegations.

Last year, Kyari was indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a $1.1 million scam over his alleged collaboration with a self-confessed international fraudster, Hushpuppi.

But on Monday, Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, held that the extradition request filed by the Federal Government lacked merit and was liable to dismissal.

Ekwo also held that the Federal Government has no basis to file the request having put Abba Kyari on trial in Nigeria over the same allegations levelled against him in the United States.
