Court Again Halts PDP National Convention, Bars INEC from Oversight

A Federal High Court in Abuja has once again stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, issuing a fresh restraining order on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Peter Odo Lifu held that the applicant, former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, had shown sufficient evidence that the party neglected key legal requirements in organising the convention including a published timetable and the opportunity to purchase nomination forms.

The order also restrains the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring, supervising or recognising the outcome of the convention while the litigation continues.

The court noted that if the convention were allowed to proceed ahead of the suit’s resolution, Lamido could suffer irreparable harm.

Lamido had filed the application after being allegedly denied access to purchase a nomination form for the national chairmanship race. He argued that the PDP’s failure to comply with its constitution and notify members of the convention timetable amounted to a violation of his rights as a party member.

This ruling comes just two weeks after a similar judgement by Justice James Omotosho on October 31 also blocked the party from holding the convention and barred INEC’s involvement.

In contrast, an Oyo State High Court recently gave clearance for the convention to go ahead highlighting the conflicting judicial orders in the case.

For now, the PDP is prohibited from going ahead with its planned election of national officers.
