A new controversy has erupted following the arrest of social media critic, VeryDarkMan, by security operatives on Monday, shortly after he publicly accused Guarantee Trust Bank (GTBank) of unauthorized deductions from his mother’s account.
VeryDarkMan, known for his blunt commentary and activism on social media, had recently taken to Instagram to call out GTBank, claiming the bank made questionable debit charges on his mother’s account without explanation.
His arrest has sparked a wave of backlash, with many Nigerians expressing concern over what they describe as an attack on freedom of speech and consumer rights.
According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, VeryDarkMan was arrested by police officers stationed at GTBank and was seen interacting with them before being taken into custody.
Confirming the development in a tweet, Adeyanju said:
“VDM was arrested by the police at GTB today. He spoke to the officers before being taken into custody. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime.”
The arrest has raised questions about the handling of customer complaints by financial institutions and the role of law enforcement in civil disputes.
As of the time of this report, neither GTBank nor the police has issued an official statement regarding the arrest or the allegations made by VeryDarkMan.
