Claudia Sheinbaum, representing Mexico’s ruling Morena party, secures an indisputable lead over her opponents in Sunday’s election, positioning her to become Mexico’s first female president.
Preliminary results from the National Electoral Institute reveal Sheinbaum capturing 58% of the vote, Her closest rival opposition candidate, Ms Gálvez, polled about 26.6 per cent of votes, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez had between 9.9 per cent of votes.
Sheinbaum, a 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico, will succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Morena party’s founder. “I will become the first woman president of Mexico,” declared Sheinbaum in her victory speech, heralding a landmark moment for Mexico’s democratic evolution.
Additionally, the June 2 general elections will determine 628 federal lawmakers, including 128 senators and 500 deputies, along with eight governors serving six-year terms, representatives for Mexico City and states, and officials for 1,580 municipalities.
