The Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos has officially renamed the iconic Charly Boy Bus Stop to Baddo Bus Stop in honour of indigenous rap superstar, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide Baddo.

The announcement, made by Bariga LCDA Chairman Hon. Kolade Alabi David during a public ceremony, is part of a wider initiative to immortalise cultural icons who have elevated the profile of Bariga both nationally and internationally.

In a video circulating online, Alabi unveiled the new name as a symbolic parting gift as his tenure draws to a close.

“Bariga is proud to have produced great talents whose impact has gone beyond Nigeria. This is our way of saying thank you and etching their names into the community’s history,” he said.

Other streets and landmarks were also renamed to honour notable personalities.

Ilaje Road is now King Sunny Ade Road, Ajidagan Street became Olamide Adedeji (Baddo) Street, Ifeanyi Street was renamed Abolore Akande (9ice) Street, and Ayodele Street at Ladi-Lak became Tony Tetuila Street.

Ilojo Crescent in Obanikoro now bears the name of England and Arsenal footballer Bukayo Saka, while Bariga Road and Community Road in Akoka were renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way and Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road respectively.

However, the renaming of Charly Boy Bus Stop has sparked mixed reactions.

Some residents see it as a fitting tribute to Olamide’s cultural impact, while others interpret the decision as politically tinged.

Critics point to Charly Boy’s open alignment with opposition movements and recent debates about Lagos’ cultural ownership as possible subtexts behind the move.

Olamide, who grew up in Bariga before becoming one of Africa’s most influential music stars, is yet to issue a public statement on the honour.
