A Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, on Friday sentenced a 52 year old Nigerian returnee from Canada, Mr. Morufudeen Idowu, to three months in prison for assaulting a Lagos State environmental enforcement officer while resisting arrest.

According to court proceedings, Mr. Idowu was apprehended after he illegally crossed the expressway at Ojota, a clear violation of Lagos traffic laws.

BlackBox Nigeria reported that in the process of being arrested by officers of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit, he reportedly assaulted one of the officers.

Upon arraignment, Mr. Idowu pleaded guilty to the charges, prompting the magistrate to convict and sentence him immediately.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, issued a firm warning that the state government would not tolerate any form of aggression against its law enforcement agents.

“The law is clear, and anyone who attacks an officer on lawful duty will face the consequences, regardless of social status or where they are coming from,” Wahab said.

He added that the conviction should serve as a deterrent to others, emphasizing that Lagos State will continue to uphold the rule of law and protect its officials in the performance of their duties.

The Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force is charged with enforcing environmental laws and public conduct regulations in Lagos.

Assaulting a KAI officer while on duty is considered a serious offense under state laws.
