Oleksandr Usyk has emerged the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world after defeating Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia, a title not held since Lennox Lewis in 1999. The fight which took place on Saturday 18th of May, 2024 at the Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was decided in a split decision on Sunday morning with Usyk leading the scorecards.
Usyk has a history of high-profile victories, having twice defeated Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua. Their first bout was on September 25, 2021, and the rematch took place on August 20, 2022, at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Usyk won the 12-round bout by split decision, with scores of 116 – 112 and 115 – 113 in his favor, and 115 – 113 in favor of Joshua.
With Usyk’s victory over the Gypsy King, boxing fans are already anticipating a possible trilogy fight between Joshua and Usyk, especially given Joshua’s recent return to form.
