The Nigerian Senate has refused to confirm the nomination of Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Lauretta is the Special Assistant to the President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Media.
The new development followed the report by the Senate Committee on (INEC), Senator Kabir Gaya who said her nomination breaches Federal Character principles, during the plenary session on Tuesday.
Kabir Gaya, cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the Constitution, saying that somebody was already a Commissioner from her zone.
Concerns that she is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) aroused controversy, but the presidential aide declared she resigned her membership in the ruling party in 2019 — a claim later proven to be incorrect.
Various civil society organizations have also demonstrated against Onochie’s nomination.
