Breaking! One dead, 15 rescued as Lagos records another boat mishap

In a tragic incident earlier today, a passenger ferry named T-Ben, en route to Ibeshe, collided with a submerged shoreline concrete structure near the power line corridor at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.
The collision occurred around 6:50 pm, causing panic and distress among the passengers aboard the vessel.
According to reports from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the ferry had departed from Addax jetty before the accident happened. Out of the 17 passengers believed to be on board, 15 have been rescued thus far. However, one casualty has been confirmed, and rescue efforts are still underway as authorities continue their search for any remaining individuals.
“15 of the 17 passengers said to be on board this boat have been rescued, with one casualty confirmed, while the rescue effort is still ongoing at the time of issuing this statement,” the statement reads.
Wuraola Alake, Public Affairs Unit, LASWA issued a statement, confirming the ongoing rescue operations conducted by officers from the Search and Rescue Unit of the agency, alongside other volunteers.
It was gathered that in 2023, No fewer than 17 persons escaped death after a boat capsized on Monday near Third Mainland Bridge close to the Bariga ferry terminal in Lagos State. Another boat mishap has occurred claiming a woman life.
As investigations into the cause of the collision commence, authorities urge caution and vigilance among commuters utilizing water transport services in Lagos State.
