The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, following allegations of statutory and financial violations.
The decision was made during a plenary session on Monday, January 13, 2025, after a majority of the lawmakers voted in favor of the motion for impeachment. Sources within the Assembly cited financial mismanagement and abuse of office as the main reasons for his removal.
Obasa, who has served as Speaker since 2015, represents Agege Constituency I and is a prominent figure in Lagos politics. His tenure, while marked by significant legislative milestones, has also faced scrutiny over allegations of financial impropriety.
Details of the allegations and the proceedings leading to his impeachment remain under wraps, but insiders suggest a rift within the Assembly may have fueled the decision.
Efforts to reach Obasa or his representatives for comments have been unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
This development marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda has been elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
