The wife of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu has returned to Nigeria following her release from prison in the United Kingdom.
This follows the sentencing of the Ekweremadus and Dr. Obinna Obeta by a UK court in 2023.
The former Deputy Senate President received a 10-year prison sentence, while Mrs. Ekweremadu was sentenced to six years for their roles in an organ trafficking case involving a young Nigerian man, David Nwamini Ukpo.
The case, which revolved around allegations of bringing Ukpo to the UK under false pretenses to procure a kidney for the couple’s ailing daughter, became a legal case under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.
Reports indicate that Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday, where her return has been met with mixed reactions.
In Enugu State, the Ekweremadu family’s home state, there has been an outpouring of goodwill from supporters and well-wishers, as shown in an online video.
This has caused varied reactions online with chukwud83598022 stating that “When poverty is weaponized in a society, we can’t escape such reactions, from folks who are only worried about their daily bread.”
lifeinsolace added”That’s their own cup of trouble. Jubilating for the release of your user and oppressor.”
Another X user stated “They jubilanting over nonsense, celebrating someone that should be Stooñêd.”
“Poverty is bad! Those women celebrating the return of Ekeweremadu’s wife are hoping bag of rice and groundnut oil! Fear poverty! Her return is good for moral lesson not ceremonial show!”added enyinnayaibeka
