The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), through its Ember months safety awareness/sensitisation campaigns, has advised all waterway users in the state to increase their safety consciousness.
This was contained in a statement by the LASWA General Manager, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel on Wednesday.
According to the statement, ferry operators, passengers, fishermen, dredgers and all other waterway users have been urged to always be observant of turbulent weather conditions and ensure strict adherence to rules and regulations on the waterways during these Embers months and at all times.
Mr Oluwadamilola urged the boat operators to regularly ensure regular maintenance of their ferries before sailing while passengers are advised to always wear their life jackets before boarding a ferry.
He added that the search and rescue unit of the agency is currently being equipped with acquisition of sophisticated equipments and training of more personnels for emergency responses. A central control room for real-time monitoring of the entire Lagos waterways is also underway.
The LASWA GM said the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to making the waterways a preferred option for transportation in the state.
He concluded by appealing for all the stakeholders’ support in the sector in order to achieve a clean, safe and successful waterways in Lagos.
