Nigeria’s Super Eagles are on the verge of making history at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament, with their impressive attacking display putting them within reach of breaking earlier goalscoring record by Cote d’ivoire.
Led by in-form strikers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Nigeria has emerged as the tournament’s most dangerous attacking side. Osimhen has already netted 4 goals, just one behind current top scorer Brahim Díaz of Morocco, while Lookman follows closely with 3 goals.
Beyond scoring, Lookman also tops the assists chart with 4 assists, highlighting his all-round offensive impact. Nigeria’s attacking depth is further reinforced by Akor Adams, who is third on the assists table with 2 assists.
So far, the Super Eagles have scored 14 goals in five matches, the most impressive in the tournament averaging over 2 goals per game. With a high-stakes semi-final clash against Morocco coming up, and the potential of two more matches remaining, Nigeria could surpass the all-time AFCON team record of 16 goals in a single edition, set by Ivory Coast in 2008.
Since the inception of AFCON, countries like DR Congo had impressive 14 goals in 1974, Zambia had 15 in 1996, Morocco recorded 14 goals in 2004, Egypt with astounding 15 goals in 2008 and 2010 respectively, Cameroon with 14 goals in both 2008 and 2021. With the current in-form 14 goals by Super Eagles, Nigeria stands a chance to set a new record for highest goalscoring record of all time.
Coach Eric Chelle’s men have shown cohesion, pace, and ruthlessness in front of goal, turning every match into a statement of intent.
If the current momentum is maintained, Nigeria might not only win their fourth AFCON title but also etch their name in the record books as the highest-scoring team in a single AFCON tournament.
