Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have fled to Moscow after the collapse of his government, Russian state news agency TASS has confirmed.
The Assad family reportedly arrived in Moscow on Sunday, where they were granted political asylum on humanitarian grounds. This follows the fall of Damascus to opposition forces, bringing an end to Assad’s 24-year rule.
Opposition fighters took control of key locations in Damascus after a swift offensive. Videos circulating online showed citizens entering presidential palaces and other government buildings, with some looting valuables and vehicles. Thousands gathered in public squares across Syria, including in Homs, to celebrate the regime’s downfall.
The Syrian opposition coalition issued a statement declaring plans to establish a transitional governing body with full executive powers. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani addressed supporters from the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, calling the event a victory for Syria.
The United Nations, Russia, and several world leaders have responded to the developments. Russian officials have called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting, while U.S. President Joe Biden described the regime’s fall as a significant moment for justice but warned of potential risks.
Israel has reportedly conducted airstrikes on strategic targets in Damascus following Assad’s departure, citing concerns over security in the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered a buffer zone in the Golan Heights to prevent hostile forces from establishing positions near Israel’s borders.
The fall of Assad’s government marks a critical juncture in Syria’s civil conflict, which began in 2011 and has led to significant loss of life and displacement. The situation remains fluid, with international stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
