Barcelona has released an official statement in response to Lionel Messi’s announcement that he will be joining Inter Miami. The reigning LaLiga champions acknowledged that they had presented Messi with a contract offer, but ultimately, the player opted to make the move to Major League Soccer (MLS).
In the statement, Barcelona stated the following: “On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player’s father and representative, informed Club President Joan Laporta of Lionel Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami, despite being presented with a proposal from Barça. This decision was made in light of the shared desire of both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi for him to once again don the blaugrana jersey.”
President Laporta understood and respected Messi’s choice to seek competition in a league with lesser demands, allowing him to distance himself from the intense spotlight and pressure he has experienced in recent years. Both Laporta and Jorge Messi have also agreed to collaborate in organizing a suitable tribute by Barcelona fans to honor the footballer who has always been cherished and will continue to be cherished by the club.
