Hon. Babajimi Benson, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Committee on Defense, has called for Ikorodu to be granted a special status within Lagos State.
Speaking at the commissioning of Eruwen road, Benson highlighted Ikorodu’s contribution to electoral victories, stating, “Ikorodu constituency alone gave Mr. President the highest votes—not just in Lagos, not just in the South-West, but in the entire Nigeria.”
He added, “The amount of votes we delivered, and the eminent position Ikorodu occupies in Lagos State, are not reflected in the resources we receive. When Lagos State asks for a special status in Nigeria, Ikorodu, too, deserves special consideration within Lagos.”
The request was supported by attendees, who affirmed the motion through a voice vote.
In response, Barrister Kolade Alabi David, National President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), acknowledged Ikorodu’s contributions and cited efforts during his leadership that prioritized its development. He referenced the 114 road project, which ensured one project per local government, stating, “Ikorodu benefited more than my own constituency, Somolu, because of our belief in inclusive governance.”
Barrister Kolade, however, concluded humorously, “Ah, you want to be Oliver Twist—don’t ask for more!”
The call for special status highlights the constituency’s push for equitable resource allocation and recognition in Lagos State.
