Ayra Starr has added another feather to her cap by winning the Best International Act at the 2025 BET Awards, held on June 9 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
This marks her first-ever BET Award and a significant moment for both her career and the expanding influence of Nigerian music on the global stage. At just 22, the Afrobeats star edged out top contenders such as Rema, Tyla, Black Sherif, and Uncle Waffles to take home the coveted prize.
In her acceptance speech, Ayra dedicated the award to young African girls with big dreams, encouraging them to believe in their voices and talents.
The win places her alongside Nigerian music heavyweights who have been recognized by BET in previous years. Burna Boy, a four-time winner (2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023), remains the most decorated Nigerian artist in the category. Tems made history in 2022 as the first female Nigerian to win the award, while Davido claimed the prize in 2018, and Wizkid secured a win in 2017.
Ayra Starr’s recognition comes on the heels of her critically acclaimed album, The Year I Turned 21. Featuring hits like Commas and Rhythm & Blues, the album showcases her genre-blending sound and a matured lyrical approach that reflects her artistic evolution.
