Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland and one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs, has passed away at the age of 91, multiple sources confirmed on Sunday evening.

According to reports from TheCable and Peoples Gazette, the paramount ruler died peacefully on Sunday, just hours after news broke of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s demise.

A reliable palace source told Western Post that Oba Adetona passed away in a private Lagos hospital due to a brief illness.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne in April 1960, becoming Awujale at just 26 years old and went on to reign for more than six decades.

During his 65-year reign, the longest in Nigeria, he became a respected voice among Yoruba monarchs, known for advocating the constitutional role of traditional rulers and promoting unity and development across Ijebuland.

A central figure in Ijebu cultural heritage, Oba Adetona was credited with reviving the Ojude Oba festival, transforming it into a global gathering that draws thousands annually.

His passing symbolizes the end of an era.

Governor Dapo Abiodun and other dignitaries are expected to mourn the loss, and the palace is planning formal funeral arrangements.

More information from the palace and the Ogun State Government is anticipated in the coming days.

This back-to-back passing of key national figures, Oba Adetona and former President Buhari marks a moment of national reflection and mourning.
