In a family statement, he was described as “a painfully loyal servant to Nigeria… steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family.”

The family said they were “shattered by this loss” but remain “forever grateful for his life, his legacy, and the love he poured into all of us.”

Details regarding the cause of his death have not yet been disclosed.

Condolence visits are being received daily at his residence from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across Nigeria, many acknowledging his contributions to trade and his connection to the Awolowo legacy.
