Nigeria’s aviation sector is bracing for turbulence as four major aviation unions have jointly announced an indefinite withdrawal of services by workers of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), effective Monday, August 11, 2025.
The announcement was made in a joint notice signed by leaders of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).
The indefinite strike announced by aviation unions, set to commence on Monday, August 11, 2025, is primarily due to the federal government’s failure to implement a revised salary structure for Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) workers.
This salary adjustment was agreed upon over eight months ago but remains unimplemented, leading to mounting frustration among the workforce.
On July 30, the unions issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding the enforcement of the new salary structure. With the deadline expiring on August 7 and no action taken by the government, the unions resolved to initiate an indefinite withdrawal of services.
“All workers of NAMA are hereby directed to stop all services with effect from Monday 11th August, 2025 at 05hrs indefinitely,” the joint statement reads.
The strike is expected to disrupt air traffic control and navigation services nationwide, potentially grounding flights and affecting both domestic and international travel.
Passengers and airlines are advised to make alternative arrangements as the situation unfolds.
