The Federal Government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered vice-chancellors of universities to re-open schools and allow students resume lectures immediately.
In a statement signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, ordering all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities to call off strike.
The statement read in parts: “Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures and the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses should be restored.”
Recall that the Union has been on strike for seven months for an agreement between them and FG. The Federal government had gone to court to challenge the action of the association as the national industrial court asked the Union to return to work, pending the determination of the substantive suit before the court.
Meanwhile, ASUU questioned the judgment stating that the national industrial court does not have jurisdiction to rule on the case between the Federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) by filing an appeal and stay of execution of the NIC order.
