The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, has commenced a total and indefinite strike to protest the Lagos State Government’s failure to implement the federal government-approved salary increment of 25% and 35% for its members since January 2023.
In a statement signed by ASUU-LASU Chairperson, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, and Secretary, Sylvester Idowu, the union stated
“This is to notify the University Community and the general Public that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University Branch has commenced a total and indefinite strike action, effective from the 6th December, 2024 to protest the non-implementation of the Federal Government approved salary increment of 25%/35% for our members since January, 2023.”
The union stated that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration has refused to implement the salary increase, which has already been applied in all federal universities and 18 state universities.
ASUU-LASU also criticized the Lagos State Government for failing to harmonize the salary scale of LASU staff with those of their counterparts in the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), who reportedly earn higher wages.
In response to claims by some student leaders that only ASUU is on strike, the union said the action involves all staff unions and urged students to stay out of the matter.
“We wish to remind them that students have no stake in the matter or possess any right to meddle in welfare issues involving staff members and the government. They should not allow themselves to be used in a matter that does not directly concern them,” the statement added.
Recall that ASUU-LASU joined other branches in a one-month warning strike in 2021 over issues of unpaid allowances and inadequate funding of state universities.
