The Action Peoples Party (APP) has achieved a decisive victory in the Rivers State local government elections, winning 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions, according to official results declared by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The Chief Election Officer, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, made the announcement on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the state capital. He confirmed that results for the remaining local government area, Etche, are yet to be declared due to ongoing collation. Justice Enebeli assured that the final results for Etche and the 319 councillorship seats across the state would be announced shortly.
The election, which took place amid tight security, saw APP sweep most of the available seats, further cementing its growing influence in the political landscape of Rivers State.
The results come in the wake of a recent explosion at the Rivers APC secretariat, an incident that caused alarm but did not derail the election process. The Rivers APC had earlier condemned the attack and expressed concerns about the conduct of the local polls, although RSIEC proceeded with the election as planned.
