Following their defeat in 2020, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reclaimed victory in Edo State as Monday Okpebholo emerged victorious in the governorship election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Okpebholo the winner with 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who has 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) with 22,361 votes.
Recall that Godwin Obaseki switched allegiance from the APC to the PDP amid internal conflicts and disagreements with his predecessor, Oshiomhole. Denied the APC governorship ticket, Obaseki joined the PDP and successfully secured reelection, defeating the APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu for his second term, which concludes on November 12, 2024.
However in yesterday’s election the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, criticized the announced results, claiming they did not match those on the IReV platform and called on INEC to uphold the will of Edo State voters.
According to INEC, 2,249,780 registered voters decided Obaseki’s successor in the off-season governorship election held on September 21, 2024.
