Lagos politics has been thrown into mourning following the death of Honourable Zainab Kosoko, councillor representing Ward C3 in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, who passed away after a brief illness.

Her death, confirmed by BlackBox Nigeria (BBN), comes less than one month after she was sworn into office and barely a week after another female councillor died in Ibeju-Lekki.

Kosoko, aged 27, was reported to have taken ill and received treatment at the hospital.

According to accounts gathered, she was discharged around 9pm on Monday night, but conflicting reports suggest she either died after returning home or while being rushed back to the hospital, but she has since been moved to the morgue.

In her honor, the Executive Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Hon. Seyi Jakande, directed that all activities at the council’s ICT Workstations be suspended on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. This suspension affected the ongoing Summer Tech Boot Camp and the PVC registration exercise.

Kosoko’s passing is particularly devastating as she was the only female councillor in the legislative chamber, admired for her calm and tender disposition. Her modest background, with her mother working as a food vendor at the council before securing her daughter’s political slot, made her journey an inspiring one for many in her community.

The back to back loss of two female councillors in Lagos within a week has sparked grief and raised concerns about the fragility of life and representation in local governance.

“May God forgive the deceased, grant her eternal rest, and give her family, friends, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the council said in its condolence message.
