Taiwo, who competed in the women’s 76kg weightlifting event, set a new junior Commonwealth Games record by lifting 120kg in the clean and jerk to win the silver medal ahead of 11 other competitors.
The 19-year-old teenager’s victory puts Nigeria in 10th position on the medals log with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Maya Laylor of Canada set a new Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk category, scoring 228 points, while Nigeria’s Liadi scored 216 points and Nauru’s Maximina Uepa finished third with 209 points.
It is worth noting that weightlifting has provided Nigeria with all of its medals at the games.
It would be recalled that Adijat Olarinoye and Rafiat Lawal claimed the two gold medals in the women’s 55kg and 59kg categories respectively and also set new Commonwealth Games records.
