The Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo has firmly denied reports circulating on social media that a new Chief Imam of Oyo has been appointed.

In a statement released by the Palace spokesperson, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, the Alaafin described the claims as “false, unfounded, and misleading,” stressing that the process of selecting a new Chief Imam is still ongoing.

“The appointment of the Chief Imam of Oyo remains the exclusive prerogative of the Alaafin,” the statement read. “We have not announced, nominated, or installed anyone in that capacity. The process is still in progress, involving wider consultations with relevant stakeholders. We urge members of the Muslim community and the general public to disregard any rumours and remain patient”.

The clarification follows viral reports suggesting that a candidate had already been selected to replace the late Chief Imam, Shaykh Moshood Adebayo Ajokidero, who passed away on January 26, 2023. Since his passing, the Muslim community in Oyo has been awaiting the appointment of a successor, a process traditionally guided by palace consultations, religious considerations, and input from community leaders.

Palace officials emphasized that once the process is concluded, the official announcement will be made through appropriate channels. “We appeal for calm and understanding. Spreading unverified claims at this delicate stage only creates unnecessary tension,” the statement added.

The position of Chief Imam of Oyo is a highly revered one, serving as the spiritual head of the Muslim community in the ancient town. The delay in filling the position has generated public interest, with calls from some Muslim groups for the appointment to be fast-tracked.

Despite the public pressure, the Alaafin’s Palace assured that due process would not be compromised. “The next Chief Imam will be chosen in line with tradition, fairness, and the best interest of the Muslim ummah in Oyo,” the spokesperson reiterated.
