Alaafin-elect, Prince Akeem Owoade, Set to Begin Traditional Rites After Return from Canada

Following reports that the Alaafin-elect, Prince Akeem Owoade, had put traditional rites on hold, the Head of Oyo Princes, Chief Mukaila Afonja, has clarified that the new monarch has not yet begun the seclusion rites which is supposed to start immediately a new king is chosen.

Afonja assured that the full traditional process will commence immediately after Prince Owoade’s return from Canada where he had to resign from his former workplace.

In a telephone interview with Vanguard, Chief Afonja explained that while Prince Owoade has already received the certificate and staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde at a ceremony held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s office, he has not yet undergone the essential traditional rites, including seclusion, which are crucial in preparing for his eventual coronation.

It would be recalled that Governor Makinde had presented the staff and certificate of office to the Alaafin-elect, stressing that anyone involved in disrupting the selection process or engaging in corrupt practices would face prosecution.

This statement came after the Oyomesi (kingmakers) who had nominated Prince Luqman Gbadegesin raised objections, claiming that the selection process was flawed and advising the governor to seek court intervention rather than publicly accusing the Oyo Mesi.

Upon his return to Oyo, the Alaafin-elect was warmly welcomed by a large crowd of indigenes. However, it was revealed that he had traveled to Canada to finalize his resignation from his place of work, leading many to believe the traditional rites had commenced prematurely.

Chief Afonja dispelled this notion, stating that the new Alaafin has yet to begin the seclusion and other rites, and that these will begin when he returns to Nigeria.

Regarding the travel abroad during the expected period of seclusion, Chief Afonja emphasized that the Alaafin-elect had not yet entered seclusion and will do so upon his return.

He further confirmed that Prince Owoade would undergo a rigorous period of tutelage and lessons during the 30-day seclusion process, which will prepare him for his coronation in April 4.
