Tensions are rising within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, as party stakeholders and grassroots members voice concerns over the controversial emergence of AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, as the party’s vice chairmanship candidate.
At the centre of the storm is the reported poor health of the APC chairmanship candidate, Alhaji Babatunde Azeez, popularly known as Tunde Disco, who has been hospitalised and has not been seen publicly in several days.
This includes his absence at the critical party primary held at Acme, the APC’s Lagos State secretariat.
Critics within the party allege that Speaker Obasa is orchestrating a strategic move by pairing his son with a visibly unwell candidate, thereby setting the stage for AbdulGaniyu to assume the top position should Disco be unable to continue in office after the election.
“This is not about competence or service, it’s about raw political calculation,” a party source said on condition of anonymity.
“How can the party field a candidate who has been hospitalised and hasn’t participated in any key political event in recent weeks?”
Party insiders say the vice chairmanship ticket handed to Obasa’s Son is less about reward for merit and more about cementing the political dynasty of the Speaker, who has long maintained a firm grip over Agege politics.
While the outgoing chairman defended the choice, citing AbdulGaniyu’s academic quality as a PhD student, many see it as a means for a power transfer within the Obasa family.
According to an insider, it was gathered that President Tinubu rejected the candidature of Obasa’s Son but he is planning to make his son the Chairman of the council through backdoor because Tunde Azeez will eventually resign owing to his health issues.
Several aggrieved aspirants and stakeholders are reportedly considering defection or legal action to challenge what they call an imposition.
“President Tinubu should pause and take a look at how Obasa is denigrating his legacies through arrogant impunity”, a youth, Bolarinwa Ademoyo said.
For many residents and political observers in Agege, the question remains: is this about public service or family succession?
