While Nigerians are still celebrating the long awaited lifting of Twitter ban on Wednesday, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo has again defended the government’s decision to suspend the operations of the microblogging platform in June 2021.
Keyamo, in his first tweet on Thursday morning since the lifting of Twitter ban, noted that Nigeria is better off with all its conditions agreed by the tech giant.
The Federal Government had suspended Twitter indefinitely after it deleted a controversial tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.
What followed was series of talks between Nigerian authorities and representatives of the social media platform where the latter was given conditions to meet in order to lift the ban.
On Wednesday, the Federal Government eventually lifted the suspension on Twitter operations, saying the tech giant had met its terms.
Reacting to the development, Keyamo called out those who prioritized politics over patriotism at time of the Twitter ban.
“For those who prioritized politics over patriotism and exhibited disingenuous righteousness on Twitter suspension, they can now see that with all the FG conditions to which Twitter agreed, Nigeria is eventually better off for it. Congratulations Nigeria,” he wrote.
However, Nigerians on social media have described the move as an attempt by the APC-led government to be in their good books ahead of the 2023 general polls.
