After one month, lawyer locked up by Akwa Ibom CJ released from prison

After one month in custody, a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong has been released from the Uyo Correctional Centre in Akwa Ibom State.

It would be recalled that on July 26, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom, Ekaette Obot ordered the remand of the embattled lawyer who was in court to defend his colleague, Leo Ekpenyong in a libel suit filed by the state governor, Udom Emmanuel.

In a series of tweets, Effiong had alleged that he was sent to prison because he protested against the presence of armed policemen in court. His incarceration had attracted outrage from lawyers and the civil society.

The lawyer was said to have been abused by prison officials who scraped his hair and beard.

On Friday morning, Effiong announced his release from prison on his Facebook page.

He shared a video of himself being welcomed by his supporters, with the caption: “History will vindicate the just.”

In another post, the legal practitioner said he was back stronger and more determined to confront the forces of oppression and to continue to speaking the truth to power.
