The Nigerian national football team, Super Eagles is set to make a return to Lagos after two decades as the country plays host to Lesotho in an African Cup of Nations Qualifiers.
The last time the Super Eagles played in Lagos was 20 years ago, precisely January 2001 in a similar AFCON qualifications match against Zambia. The game ended with a win for the Nigerian side who won by a lone goal by then superb striker, Victor Agali.
After two decades of playing outside the state, Lagos is once again welcoming back the Eagles as Nigeria continues her campaign for a slot at the African Cup of Nations. The Eagles will first be traveling to Porto Novo on March 27 to face the Squirrels of Benin before returning to Africa’s commercial capital on March 30 where they will be challenged by the Crocodiles of Lesotho who currently sit at the bottom of the Group L table.
Nigeria is currently ontop of the table with 8 points from 4 matches while Benin is a close second with 7 points. Sierra Leone is a distant third with 3 points.
Already, the Nigeria Football Federation is putting all hands on deck to ensure a successful outing for the Eagles while the Lagos State Government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the Lesotho match is not just hitch free but one filled with the glitz and glamour Lagos is known for.
BlackBox Nigeria gathered that the authorities of the Lagos State Sports Commission are currently putting finishing touches to the newly regrassed Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere where the match will hold.
The 13 year old edifice sits at the heart of the city and is expectedly the obvious choice to host the Nigerian side and their Lesotho counterparts.
