Nigerian Afro-pop star Adekunle Gold, popularly known as AG Baby, has threatened legal action against Wema Bank and its digital banking platform, ALAT, over what he describes as unauthorized use of his viral ‘First Class Giveaway’ initiative in their latest advertising campaign.

The singer, who recently trended online for gifting cash prizes to Nigerians who earned first-class university degrees, accused the bank of exploiting the goodwill of the campaign without his consent.

In a promotional message shared by Wema Bank via ALAT, the brand made a direct reference to Adekunle Gold’s initiative, stating:

“AG Baby no send you first class gift? No worries, ALAT’s got you covered. Enjoy up to 70% off your favorite brands this weekend via eVouchers on the ALAT app – it’s no crime to not have a first-class degree.”

Reacting swiftly via his official X account, Adekunle Gold publicly called out the bank, questioning when the partnership was approved.

“Dear @wemabank @alat\_ng, when did this start? You’ll be hearing from my people,” the singer wrote.

The artist confirmed that no formal agreement or endorsement deal had been reached with Wema Bank or ALAT regarding the campaign.

Adekunle Gold’s legal team is reportedly reviewing the matter and may pursue legal action over intellectual property rights and unauthorized commercial use of his brand.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, with fans and legal experts weighing in on the growing concerns over corporate use of viral content without creator approval.

As of press time, Wema Bank had not issued any official response to the allegation.
