Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has opened up about the inspiration behind the title of his forthcoming sixth studio album, Fuji, which is set to be released worldwide on October 3, 2025.
In a statement shared on social media, Adekunle Gold said the album title is a tribute to the Fuji genre and what it represents to Nigerians particularly those who grew up in Lagos. He explained that Fuji is not just a style of music but a cultural expression that reflects everyday life, hustle, and resilience.
“I named this album after an entire genre because Fuji is bigger than music. It is Lagos, it’s street royalty, it’s our story, our hustle, our heritage turned global,” he said.
Adekunle Gold further explained that the choice of title is tied to his personal journey and desire to reconnect with his roots. He noted that Fuji is not about nostalgia but about reimagining and presenting the genre in a way that resonates with today’s audience.
“This is not nostalgia, this is reinvention. What we see as everyday life in Nigeria deserves to sit on the world’s biggest stages,” he added.
The album’s cover art also reinforces its message, featuring Adekunle Gold seated on a chair commonly found at Lagos parties, reimagined as a throne. “The blue behind me is royal, the red on me is power, and the word ‘Fuji’ holds the story of where we come from,” he explained, describing the symbolism behind the imagery.
The artist has previously shared his admiration for Fuji legends and how their music shaped his understanding of storytelling and rhythm.
Fans have reacted enthusiastically to the announcement, with many praising him for shining a light on one of Nigeria’s most influential music genres and for using his platform to preserve and celebrate Yoruba culture.
