Elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. His family announced his death in a statement on Friday, February 14, 2025, stating that he died peacefully at his Lekki, Lagos residence.
The statement, signed by his children—Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh, Mrs. Adeola Azeez, and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo—expressed gratitude for his life dedicated to the service of Nigeria.
“With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo,” the statement read.
A prominent advocate of true federalism, Adebanjo was a former Organising Secretary of the defunct Action Group and the National Leader of Afenifere. Over the years, he became a father figure to many politicians, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who often referred to him as a mentor and “father.”
Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family stated that funeral arrangements would be announced after consultations with friends, associates, and key interest groups. Condolence registers have been opened at his Lagos residence in Lekki and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo remained a fearless advocate for good governance, equity, and justice in Nigeria until his last breath.
