The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly have started an investigation into two matters affecting Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki and Chairman, Committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye. The lawmakers are to be investigated whether they have both abused their privileges as lawmakers.
The move to probe the two lawmakers arised after a motion was moved by Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South requested that the allegations against Saraki and Melaye should be investigated.
Dr Bukola Saraki has been alleged to use his office to seek revenge against the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service due to a seized bullet-proof Range Rover which belonged to him. Also, Dino Melaye has been accused of using a forged degree certificate which he used in running for the legislative seat.
It will be recalled that the news about the seized bullet-proof jeep leaked last week which showed how the office of the Senate President presented fake documents on request by the Customs, a development that resulted to the impounding of the vehicle since January, 2017.
Ndume insisted that Saraki was not above being probed just as Salisu Buhari, Aminu Bello Masari, Adolphus Wabara, Evans Enweren and Dinmeji Bankole, all former leaders of the National Assembly were probed while in office when matters such as this came up.
The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges has been mandated to look into the matters and report back to the House in two weeks.
