Abuja Court Sentence Charles Okah, Nwabueze To Life Imprisonment For Masterminding Independence Day Bombing

The duo of Charles Okah and Obi Nwabueze were on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of masterminding the two bomb blasts which occured in Warri (March 15th, 2010) and Abuja (October 1st, 2010).

The Federal High Court affirmed that the two convicts planned the attacks with Charle’s elder brother, Henry Okah, who is the leader of defunct Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND). Henry is currently serving his jail term after he was convicted for same offence and sentenced to 24years imprisonment by a South African Court in 2013.

The sentence was passed by Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the FHC, Abuja in his 145-page judgement which lasted for over four hours on Wednesday amid heavy presence of Policemen who had taken positions around the Court premises as early as 8am in preparation for the judgement.

Justice Kolawole ruled that the Prosecution led by Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN) had proved the charged preferred against Charles and Nwabueze beyond reasonable doubt having started the case in December 7th, 2010.

In his reaction to the judgement, Okah’s lawyer, Emeka Okoroafor vowed to appeal against the judgement after reviewing it with his client. This position was also confirmed by Ogheneovo Otemu, lawyer to the second defendant, Nwabueze.
