The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has praised the state government’s decision to ban the use of styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state.
BlackBox Nigeria reported that the Lagos government announced the ban on Sunday in a move to address the environmental impact of these products.
In a statement on Monday, the General Manager of LASWA, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel said the ban will enhance water transportation safety in the state.
According to him, styrofoam poses significant safety hazards to boat users, adding that the infiltration of these products into Lagos waterways remain a major concern.
“The decision to ban Styrofoam aligns with our commitment to creating a safer and more sustainable water transportation system. The adverse consequences of Styrofoam on our waterways cannot be overstated, making this ban a crucial step forward,” he said.
Emmanuel noted the urgency of ending the throwaway culture and then stressed the need for a concerted effort to address plastic pollution.
