Developing story…Few days ago, the Nigerian media space was filled with reports of how operatives of the nation’s anti-graft agency arrested about 89 persons and labelled them suspected internet fraudsters, popularly called “Yahoo boys”, new development have showed that the arrest was uncalled for.

A source in Ibadan disclosed to BBN360 that out of the 89 persons that were at the club at the time of arrest, only 3 were actually suspected fraudsters after investigation and the 86 others were people that had gone to the club for fun sake. The source whose brother was among the victims arrested disclosed that the agency released others after days of investigation and realised not all were involved.

Another source, a student writer further revealed to BBN360 that he was also among the 89 persons arrested at the popular Club360, Ibadan on January 18th where he had gone to gather contents needed for brand promotion of the club but ended up in detention cells of the EFCC after the arrest. He disclosed that while some were transported down to Lagos, others were held in Ibadan. He added that he was released along with others after thorough investigation which revealed he had no connectioms with the suspected internet fraudsters.

BBN360 findings revealed that the agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission didn’t offer any apology nor support to the 86 persons that were unconnected to fraudulent activities as they were released without briefing and subjected to transporting their ways back to their different locations.

It will be recalled that the EFCC had on January 20th released an official statement regarding its raid of a club in the city of Ibadan, Oyo State where it reported that 89 suspected internet fraudsters “Yahoo boys” were arrested by it’s operatives in a sting operation. The supposed suspects were then paraded with all instructed to turn their backs for a photo shoot while also cars seized at the club were paraded alongside the suspects.
