Education, they say, is the key to success. However, in this 21st century, it appears schooling doesn’t guarantee the success of man as these celebrities have proved that education is not the only way to become successful.
Listed below are successful musicians who have made it in life although they had to drop out of school at a point in their lives — in this case, the Lagos State University.
Wizkid
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and song writer .
He began recording music at the age of 11 and managed to release a collaborative album with the Glorious Five, a group he and a couple of his church friends formed. Wizkid signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) in 2009. He rose to prominence after releasing “Holla at Your Boy”, the lead single from his debut studio album Superstar (2011). ” Tease Me/Bad Guys “, ” Don’t Dull “, “Love My Baby”, “Pakurumo” and “Oluwa Lo Ni” were also released as singles from the Superstar album. In February 2014, Wizkid became the first Nigerian musician to have over one million followers on Twitter.
Wizkid started his higher education at Lagos State University, but in the second year, he transferred to Lead City University. Wizkid was in 200 level he dropped out because of his music career.
D’banj
Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo better known by his stage name D’banj , is a Nigerian musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, entrepreneur and television personality. He has won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009, Best International Act: Africa at the 2011 BET Awards , and Best-selling African Artist at the 2014 World Music Awards , Evolution award at the 2015 MTV Africa Music awards.
D’banj then studied mechanical engineering at the Lagos State University to, but due to the constant strikes and several irregularities in the school he decided to withdraw.
Brymo
Olawale Ashimi popularly known as Brymo is a Nigerian singer and songwriter from Okokomaiko, Ojo, Lagos State. He was born into a Muslim family where his father worked in carpentry and his mother was a petty trader.
At his tender age, he attended Aganju Aka Primary School before proceeding to Japual Primary School, to finish up his primary school education.
He started music in 1999 when he was still in secondary school, his passion for music grew so much at that time and he concluded to go into full-time music-making.
Brymo got admitted into Lagos State University (LASU) for his tertiary education but had to drop out to pursue his musical career.
9ice
Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande popularly known as 9ice is a Nigerian musician and song writer.
Born into a polygamous home of five wives and nine children, in Ogbomosho , Oyo State in Western Nigeria. He grew up in Bariga suburbs of Lagos. 9ice had also dreamed of being a musician, which led him to drop out of the Lagos State University whilst studying Law. 9ice began singing at the age of 14. His parents discovered his singing talent, a decided to allow him become a musician.
Asa
Bukola Elemide popularly known as Asa is a Nigerian-French musician, songwriter, and instrumentalist. Her stage name “Aṣa” means ‘Hawk’ in Yoruba.
Best known for her dreadlocks and guitar sidekick, she has received both local and international acclaim. Her genre of music is Jazz, Pop and Indie Pop.
She attended the prestigious Corona High school Lagos and went further to a federal government college in Jos. She moved back to Lagos to attend Lagos State University and was enrolled in the Department of Theatre Arts and Music.
She got admission to study as a diploma student which required her spending about 2years but Asa spent only about a little over 6 months and then left because it was clashing with her professional musical classes at the renowned saxophonist, Peter King’s Musical School in Badagry, where she majored in Guitar studies for a year.
Bella Shmurda
Akinbiyi Abiola Ahmed popularly known as Bella Shmurda is a Nigerian singer.He rose to prominence with the release of the song “Vision 2020”, and a follow-up remix which featured Nigeria rapper Olamide.
He studied History and International Relations in Lagos state university but dropped out to pursue his music career after failing exams.
Oxlade
Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who has released several chart-topping songs. Oxlade is widely recognized for his EP “Oxygene” which became the most-streamed album in Nigeria on Apple Music upon its release. Oxlade is deeply passionate about music, and this can be seen from how far he has gone towards establishing his musical career.
