By Only 6.5% Registered Voters Participated In Lagos LG Polls Says Youth Council
Weeks after the Local Government Election was conducted in Lagos State, the the Lagos Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria have revealed that a small fraction of registered voters in the State participated in the polls.
The report released by the Lagos chapter revealed that only 6.5% of registered voters participated in the election which brought in a new administration in the LGAs and LCDAs.
The Group in its statement stated that the report on the exercise reflects voter’s aparthy aside the fact that the residents were restricted from exercising their franchise due to the heavy rainfall witnessed that day. It also disclosed that some areas that were flooded had the least of residents participating in the voting process.
The report revealed that out of the 9,013,534 registered voters, only 593,283 voted across the 57 LGAs and LCDAs, amounting to 6.5% of the voters.
Aside from the low turn out of voters, the Youth Council revealed that the election was free and fair as many recommedations were made in favour of the Lagos State Independent Commission which conducted the exercise.
The report which was signed by the Chapter Chairman, Comrade Gbenga Ogunsola commended the efforts of LASIEC and advised the need to increase it’s voters’ education and training of its staff and Ad-hoc staff.

NYCN LAGOS STATE CHAPTER RELEASE ITS REPORT ON LOCAL GOVT. ELECTION, UNVEIL PROGRAM FOR 2017 INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY CELEBRATION..
The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter today release its report as an observer at the just concluded local government/local council election held on 22nd July, 2017. In the report released to pressmen today at the Lagos Youth House after careful evaluation and recommendation.
The report reflects voter’s apathy aside from the heavy rainfall that refrained residents from exercising their franchise at the poll as several areas, communities were affected by flood. In the same vein, a far less percentage of vote casted as against the total number of registered voters in such that, out of 9,013,534 registered voters only 593,283 voted across the 20LGs/37LCDAs in the state which shows that only 6.5% voted in the elections.
The elections despite the issue of low turnout was adjudged to free and fair in the report with several recommendations to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, to increase its core effort on continuous voters cum political education to Lagos residents, training and retraining of its staff to ensure efficiency in service delivery and more importantly, early recruitment and training for its ad-hoc staff amongst others.
The report according to Comrade Gbenga Ogunsola, Chairman National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter is violence-free of any kind in all Local government which indicate that Lagosians are peace loving people, he shower encomium of security agencies for doing a good job during the election also he applauded the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for fulfilling one of its electoral promise to providing adequate security and good governance for Lagosians.
Comrade Ogunsola while reflecting on the peacefulness of the elections reminded the youth of the theme for the 2017 international youth day ‘YOUTH BUILDING PEACE’ and advised that the process of building peace is a responsibility of all regardless of our status and position in the society, that peace does not mean the absence of war alone but availability of a conducive living environment, adequate humanitarian services to help the less privileged, good governance, respect for human dignity and any variable that will make life meaningful to Nigerians.
He explained that this year’s international Youth day is so significant that the theme cut across all human endeavour in which the NYCN Lagos is utilizing to celebrate in a grand style of a month long program which commences on Friday 11th August, 2017 with a special jumat service by 1pm at the Lagos Central mosque to pray for the Youths, Lagos State and Nigeria in general, a match past parade/guard of honour by uniform organization to promote the core values of volunteerism and youth work on Saturday 12th August, 2017 at the Evans Square, Ebute-Meta by 10am with subsequent visit to less-privileged homes, traditional rulers and more importantly the much awaited ‘Lagos Youth Security Summit’ Whose date will be announced in earnest and a thanksgiving service at the foursquare gospel church on Sunday 27th August, 2017 to mark the end of its line-up event and give thanks to the Almighty for giving the youths of Lagos the unending opportunity to witness this year’s celebration.
