A tragic domestic violence incident has claimed the life of Barrister Felicia Temitope Odu, who reportedly died after a brutal assault allegedly carried out by her husband at their Ikorodu home in Lagos.

Odu, aged 56, had just been called to the Nigerian Bar in September 2025 after years of diligent study and personal sacrifice.

According to family and friends, she upgraded her education, supported her children and provided for her household largely on her own.

Reports state that on a recent day in October, Odu was physically assaulted by her husband in front of one of their sons. Neighbours and church members say the assault was the culmination of more than two decades of suffering under his abuse despite repeated pleas for help from church leaders.

Immediately after the incident, the husband was arrested, but sources claim he was later granted bail.

Legal and women’s rights groups have responded swiftly. The Nigerian branch of Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) issued a statement calling for a full and transparent investigation, stressing that the case underscores how domestic abuse can escalate into femicide if left unchecked.

The incident has reignited national debate on how Nigeria addresses domestic violence.

Activists are calling for stronger enforcement of existing laws, faster police response, and more support services for victims who fear speaking out.

They point out that many women continue to suffer in silence due to stigma, social pressure and weak institutional response.

Friends described Odu as an inspiring figure: a former interpreter in her church, a self‑funded law graduate, and an advocate for her children’s education.

As investigations continue, many observers believe the outcome of this case could set a precedent in Nigeria for how alleged domestic abusers are held accountable.
