NUC Approves Lagos State University’s Open And Distance Learning Institute

 

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given its consent to the establishment of the Lagos State University (LASU) Open and Distance Learning & Research Institute (ODLRI) at Main Campus, Ojo.

The NUC’s approval is coming weeks after one of it’s team, the Universities Regulatory Body paid a visit to the facilities dedicated to the Institute.

In a communique sent to BlackBox Nigeria by Mr Ademola Adekoya, the Cordinator of the University’s Centre for Information, Press and and Public Relation (CIPPR), the ODLRI is established by the current Vice Chancellor, Professor (Prince) Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun. He revealed that the Institute is established to replace the recently closed LASU External Systems (LASUES, which had external campuses around the State).

He also added that the Institute will serve the purpose of LASUES; to provide opportunity for millions seeking to knowledge from the Citadel of Learning, which is still the Best Ranking State University in the country.

Renowned Academic, former Executive Secretary of NUC and also a Distinguished Professor of LASU, Professor Peter Okebukola has been appointed as Head of the ODLRI.

Mr Adekoya further said Professor Fagbohun had assured the Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, through the visiting Team that the ODLRI will deliver gold standard quality University Education to all seeking First Degrees, but are unable to get admission via the regular programmes. The Institute will kick off with Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

LASU-ODLRI has several unique features. Course contents are pitched above NUC minimum standards with slant on 21-Century skills especially critical thinking, teamwork, entrepreneurship and digital literacy. It will be delivered on a learner-friendly, easy-to-navigate e-learning platform with 24-hour learner support. It will apply global best practices in Open and Distance learning delivery. Another distinguishing feature is that it will embed research and development into all operations. All course materials are pilot tested before full diffusion. There are no imported courseware as all materials are proudly homegrown in LASU. It will blend 30% on-campus instruction with 70% instruction in a technology-enabled virtual learning environment.

With the approval of the Institute, sale of forms is expected to commence any moment from now.
